Each year, Whisky Magazine recognizes the people who have made a critical and lasting contribution to the whisky arena in the world.
The first “Inductee” in 2004 was Michael Jackson, a writer and journalist who wrote many influential books on whisky. In 2018, two individuals have been receiving this famous recognition.
Damian Riley-Smith (right), head of Whisky Magazine, was chairing the session and presented the awardees.

Dr Nicholas Morgan is the Head of Whisky Outreach at Diageo.
He is a famous character in the Whisky world, and his story, as him, is unusual. His doctorate comes from the study of history and he was initially teaching modern history in Glasgow. He was asked to create the archive of the Distillers Company Limited after its takeover by Guinness, forming United Distillers in 1987. He succeeded beyond expectation, and was ultimately offered a marketing role in this company which became in 1997 the famous Diageo.
He then demonstrated that he had a vision and a very innovative mindset. He believed in Single Malt whisky at a time where blended was the key driver of the company, and challenged the status quo by, among many examples, betting on Talisker (which produced and sold 20 times more after its reshape), or on pushing for single cask bottling, a non-sense at the time.

This is the first time that the honor goes to two individuals, as they are equally responsible for the incredible story of Kavalan, putting Taiwan as a key country for whisky. When the Lee family decided to engage into the whisky adventure, most of the experts told them that this was not possible given the local conditions. To their credit, it is true that the climate is far from what one can see in Scotland. But India creates also great whiskies, so they kept following their vision, and ultimately prevailed by leveraging their local uniqueness and designing a concept of whiskies through the Solist range.
The sub-tropical climate of Taiwan helps for a faster maturation, as their angel share is around 14% per year. They also designed a special way to re-use the European casks: by shaving the inside, toasting and re-charring, helping getting the best from the wine aromas still in the staves.
Their vision, work and innovative way of approaching the maturation put them at the top of the whisky world in 2015, after earning the precious recognition of best single malt whisky of the world, for the Solist Vinho Barrique.
This 2018 prize is rewarding the formidable impact that they have created in the whisky sphere. So well deserved.
