This is an amazing Scottish whisky crafted from a great inspiration of Bill Lumsden, the Glenmorangie’s Master of Whisky Creation. Glenmorangie distillery is located in the Highlands region of Scotland.
The LOOK
Before even going to the make of this unique whisky, let’s look at the packaging itself: it is a beautiful black and gold box that tells immediately that there is a jewel inside.
The BOTTLE:
And this is true: inside the coffer you find a bottle that is a wonderful piece of art, displaying the black and gold color, and a unique neck in silver shiny fabric. When you uncork it, the first feeling you have is the weight of the cork silver-capped: it is very heavy. If you are with friends, let them take it in their hand, they will all be stunned by it.
Now, what can be this whisky, coated with such a fantastic bottle and case?
The MAKE
All of it starts with a crazy idea: why not using a barley that is traditionally used to make beer only? Among all the possible varieties of barley, the vision was to select a grain that would contribute to provide chocolate flavors to the end product. Lumsden selected the barley variety called “chocolate malt” that is roasted, which is totally uncommon in the whisky world. To keep the Glenmorangie soul, the rest of the barley was
After the fermentation process, the wash is distilled twice through Glenmorangie’s copper-pot stills, the tallest of Scotland, whose necks culminate at 5.14 meters high, more than 16 feet.

Following the distillation, the spirit is aged in three different casks: first fill bourbon casks, new charred barrels, and sherry casks. At the time of the blending, some of the oldest Glenmorangie whiskies, ranging between 35 and 40 years old, are added.
The Glenmorangie Signet was first produced in 2004, and is still available in retail.
With Bill Lumsden, discussing about the Signet, one of hie best accomplishment.
THE TASTE
Glenmorangie Signet, 46% ABV
NOSE:
Take your time as there are many things coming out. It starts with a mix of plum, roasted coffee bean and dark cocoa, then candied orange peels, and other fruits are showing, along with ginger and a hint of mint.
PALATE:
Round and a bit oily, the cocoa comes strong, along with cinnamon and candied orange peels that evolves into lychees and sweetness.
FINISH:
Long, fading out softly on fruit and citrus.
Overall: Absolutely superb.
AWARDS among the many: Gold medal 2017 at the International Spirit Competition, Whisky of the Year 2016 at the IWC, Gold medal 2016 for “The Scotch Whisky Masters” for the Spirit Business, Best Single Malt Scotch (no age statement) Trophy 2013, at the International Wine and Spirits Competition.
MY TAKE:
This is the kind whisky that you don’t just drink: you enjoy it. It is an experience to nose it, taste it, and feel an immense pleasure to connect with the spirit and its aromas. The preferred setting would be the cozy atmosphere, warm and a little dark, around a fireplace with friends. If you want to add even more to the moment, take some dark chocolate with the golden spirit: the two will marry perfectly.
