France is the first market in the world for scotch whisky consumption, but the country is not even in the top 10 for whisky production. This may change one day as more and more distilleries are created in this country. One of them, “Distillerie Mavela”, produces a 7 YO single malt, our focus today. It is located in the very south of France, in an island called “île de beauté” or “island of beauty”, as the scenery of this piece of land is so beautiful. This is Corsica, the place where Napoleon was born.
BACKGROUND:
This release was limited to 6600 bottles and is no longer available. The spirit is matured in casks previously filled of Patrimonio Muscat, a local sweet white wine. The casks are made with local old oak (more than 200 years old) offering a high quality and an excellent interaction with the spirit.
The distillation is made through a column still (Holstein) that was used to distill fruit spirit that this distillery is also producing. It is hard to tell whether this has an influence on the whisky.
TASTING: 42% ABV
Nose: light, woody, fruity (cooked plum) with hints of wax, and orange peel.
Palate: Very light, the oak comes first, with some wax, sweet caramel and hints of pepper.
Finish: Medium finish, with oak and light caramel.
AWARD:
The whisky obtained the high grade of 89/100 in the Jim Murray’s whisky bible
