This is the type of limited release that you can find only at the distillery or online directly from the Laphroaig website. The bottle is so rare and wanted that they open the site only to the registered “Friends of Laphroaig” a given day at a given precise time, with limited purchase to only one bottle per person. This way makes everyone equal in the chance of getting the precious spirit,

TASTING: 58.2% ABV

It is now time to smell, and start the journey of tasting.

Nose: Of course, the unmistakable Laphroaig type of peat and salt: expected and found. Behind that peat, which takes me some time always, There is some spiciness melted with the sweetness of vanilla and honey. Some can call it also medicinal, but we lose a bit of poetry.

Palate: The peat and saltiness come first as usual. Then, some citrus (more orange peel than lemon) and some pepper. The oaky notes are coming also creating additional strength.

Finish: this is lingering for a while, with peat and seaweed and pepper also. Very nice and warm feeling in the mouth, asking for more.

WHAT TO EAT WITH?

Smoked salmon of course, alone or with some spicy cream cheese, oysters and seafood in general.

MY TAKE ON IT:

I acquired it online directly from the distillery website and the liquid meets the high expectation I have.

If you have a chance to taste it, just look at the bottle, and enjoy the moment. Not everybody can claim that she or he had such bottle in hands.

Then pour your glass (a whisky glass if possible, like Glaincairn or tulip shape), and listen to the typical noise the bottle makes while releasing the first centiliters of spirit, and then the sound of the liquid filling the glass.

You can look at it to analyze the color, the legs of course, but I tend to do it with a different intention: I just savor the few seconds that separate me from the pleasure of smelling then drinking. Like the cat plays with the mouse, knowing for sure he will end up by eating the rodent. This is part of the pleasure, taking my time enjoying the moment for what it is: the antechamber of a blessed experience.

DID YOU KNOW?

Laphroaig started this yearly cask strength release in 2009, batch 001, and continues each year ever since. Bottles of previous years are no longer available, unless you find them by chance in a remote place or in an auction at a very high price. This explains why so many people try hard to get the limited release as soon as it becomes available.
