The most important event in the whisky world just happened in London, UK, to highlight the best of the best expressions of the year. Many producers, retailers and other professionals were hosted at the 2019 edition of the World Whisky Awards.

The selection process is operated by a panel of worldwide experts who tasted all the samples blindly in three rounds. The only information the judges had was the ABV (Alcohol by volume) and the category into which each sample would compete into.

This is the first time ever that an Irish whiskey is awarded with the most prestigious recognition: World’s best Single malt.

This 2019 editions is also confirming the lead from Japanese distilleries, taking the titles of the best grain, best blended malt, best blended and best blended limited release.

It is important to note that the Scotch whiskies didn’t get much this year, saving the party by getting the best retail exclusive with Highland Park 18 years.

Last but not least, the Tasmanian island of Australia still counts at the top of the world, with a second crown in a row for best single cask single malt.

In discussion with Jota Tadashi, Master distiller at Fuji-Gotemba. He claims that the pure water that comes from the mount Fuji has a great responsibility in the quality of his whiskies. While he has not tried another water to compare, some of his colleagues from other distilleries have, and they can tell the difference.

With Patrick McGuire, the distiller from Tasmania, this small Island, part of Australia, the size of West Virginia. We could wonder whether there are distilleries around… Patrick reported to me that there will be about 50 distilleries by the end of the year! Competition, but also stimulation. It looks that the area is quite suitable for this kind of activity.

Gemma has started many years ago at the distillery and moved in the US as Brand Ambassador; she came back to the UK at the position of Global Brand Ambassador. She might have good Balvenie suprises in the coming months…

Interacting with Ichiro Akutoi, Master distiller at the Chichibu distillery. He is building a second distillery three times bigger than the first one, after building a mizunara cooperage. This will please his fans as currently, it is quite hard to find a bottle from his distillery, almost gone as soon as it hits the shelves!

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://whiskey-gourmet.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/20-1.jpg” align_tablet=”center” align_phone=”” align_last_edited=”on|desktop” _builder_version=”3.23″ border_width_all=”3px” border_color_all=”#ffffff”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.27.4″ text_font=”Josefin Sans||||||||” text_text_color=”#ffffff”]

With Jack Teeling, a rare appearance outside of Ireland! He is coming back home with five awards, the most prestigious being the best single malt of the year, first ever for an Irish whisky. A fantastic reward for all the hard work done from him and his Team.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://whiskey-gourmet.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/11-2.jpg” align_tablet=”center” align_phone=”” align_last_edited=”on|desktop” _builder_version=”3.23″ border_width_all=”3px” border_color_all=”#ffffff”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.27.4″ text_font=”Josefin Sans||||||||” text_text_color=”#ffffff”]

With Ian Chang, Master Distiller at Kavalan: no big reward this year, but he has already collected more than 200 awards since he started at Kavalan, with the award of “Distiller of the year” at the 2017 International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC). He is working on slowing down the aging at his distillery, which is rarely heard in Scotland. But the Taiwanese climate is very different, and they boast an Angel’s share of about 12%, far above the European standards!
