Sometimes there is a need to contemplate one’s own collection as a whole. When the collection is sizable, it is better to do it outside.

What came naturally to mind was to form the shape of that Wonderful letter that starts all the Whiskies of the World.

Here are displayed 223 uncorked and unduplicated bottles (the spares are stored), coming from 12 different countries and up to 32 years old.

Most are single malts, but there are some blended, rye whiskies and bourbons

OTHER COLLECTIONS

The collection above is quite modest in comparison to the largest in the world. Let’s review some iconic whiskey places

Surprisingly, the most renowned whiskey collection of the world was located in Brazil!

The owner, Claive Vidiz, built up his collection over 35 years. He wouldn’t think of collecting these spirits until he received some rare bottles as gifts. He then developed a passion for it and acquired very rare bottles along with less prestigious, to achieve the high number of 3,384 bottles. If we do the math, it corresponds to about two new bottles every week…

This is not the largest collection of the world, but certainly the most refined, as it counts many very rare expressions of now disappeared distilleries. Among them a peated Brora or a lagavulin from the 1950′.

He decided to sell his collection, and fortunately the buyer, Diageo, not any buyer, did purchase it completely in 2006. The acquisition price has not been disclosed. The collection was shipped from Brazil to Edinburgh and displayed as of 2009 in a museum, the Scotch Whisky Experience.

To date, the largest collection of unduplicated whiskey is owned by Alfredo Gonçalves, from Lisbon, Portugal. He boasts a collection of about 10,500 whiskies.

He started his collection in Africa and acquired many bottles as he was traveling often. It took him about 40 years to accumulate his current collection that is displayed in his liquor shop in Lisbon: “Whisky & Co”

Where is located the place to find the largest number of whiskies for sale?

It seems to be in Scotland, at the Glenesk Hotel in the village of Edzell. It boasts 1,031 different varieties of whiskey available behind its bar.

It has surpassed the 800 bottles offering displayed by the previous holder of the title, Millionaire’s Casino in Ayrshire.

Nowadays it is hard to be sure of who’s offering the largest choice of whiskey: the Golden Promise bar in Paris claims more than 1.000 bottles, with many prestigious and now disappeared expressions.

Is there any place that offers more whiskies?

If you have the answer, please comment, and we’ll update this post!
