The #30 warehouse was already half destroyed and collapsed completely on July 4th 2018, in the middle of the Independence Day celebration. The building area had been secured and no casualties were to be reported.

What is the cause of the collapse?

The exact cause is still not known. The building was a wooden structure with a thin roof in steel. It is possible that there was some moisture intake in the wood due to a very rainy spring, increasing the overall weight to a breaking point. All the other Barton warehouses have been thoroughly inspected and didn’t show any sign of weakness.

What happens to the barrels?

It is amazing to see that most of the barrels are intact. This shows how strong a container it is. So far, there is no place to store these barrels. They are exposed to air, wind and more heat from direct sun. The expected effect is a much faster maturation, which means a faster decrease of the content of the casks.

Sazerac company, the owner of Barton, is undergoing the construction of a new warehouse that will eventually host these homeless barrels.

Overall, about 18,000 barrels are on the ground.

What will happen to the whiskey stored in these barrels?

Now, let’s put ourselves in the company’s shoes. The principle is to always use challenges to find a hidden opportunity.

The master distillers will eventually taste all these barrels. Because of the unique and extreme conditions, some might achieve a stage of full maturation, and maybe show a good taste, much faster.

One can think that they might be tempted to create a special release -like the “collapse release” – with either single barrels or small batches of these uniquely maturated casks. And this might turn out that this catastrophe will create some excellent bourbons!

Time will tell…

What happens to the environment?

At first, whiskey coming from smashed or leaking barrels went directly downward to a stream killing 800 fishes. The current main concern is to prevent this to happen again. Work is ongoing to create a natural barrier to keep alcohol out of the water. Massive earth-moving operations are underway.
